Working with Families

In end-of-life care, family serves as the “unit of care”. Most families are involved in the caregiving and medical decision-making process of the patient with advanced illness. However, decision making in end-of-life is intricate and conflicting demands of family members can further complicate the process that may lead to lifelong regrets. This series of training will introduce the needs of families in end-of-life care, the strategies in facilitating effective communication and positive exchanges within the family, resolving family differences or conflicts, and addressing the emotional and practical needs of family members in the decision making and caregiving process, so as to strengthen the competence and confidence of end-of-life care workers in supporting families as a whole.
