While technology in health care has advanced significantly nowadays, the important aspect in caring for patients at end of life still require good “Bonding” between health care providers and patients and their carers. This workshop aims to provide a wealth of clinical examples and practical strategies to improve ones’ skills to help this group of patients. A 10 points effective clinical communication skill will be discussed in depth which will enhance ones’ understanding of their problems and ways to tackle them. Furthermore, the process of caring for them may help one’s personal growth because one may gain more insight in meaning of life through observing how people go through end of life.

A common concern shared by oncologists and palliative care physicians is the level of which a patient and their family are prepared for end of life care. Unpreparedness may expose issues such as, perceived denial, tremendous anxiety and fear, barriers due to personal beliefs, complexities of families, family secrets, uncommunicative patients and out-of-reach families, difficult communications, and overall helplessness experienced by the patient and/or family. Families that are struggling with issues such as these are not easy to deal with, and are often categorised as “difficult”’ or “challenging”. Throughout this workshop, the trainer will explore conventional approaches and strategies in dealing with family struggles, and supplements these approaches with his own work through case illustrations. As there is no one approach that will be effective for every patient and family, participants will appreciate the discussion of a variety of approaches.

晚期病患的常見症狀如疼痛﹑吞嚥困難﹑氣促﹑水腫﹑情緒不穩(包括激動﹑低落和焦 慮)等，不但直接影響病患者的生活質素，也容易令照顧者和家屬不知所措，心力交瘁。 本講座將讓公眾人士和照顧者了解晚期病患者的身心症狀，同時為照顧者提供一個交 流平台，分享他們為晚期病患者提供日常照料時最關心的問題。

After the completion of the workshop, the participant will be able to identify the seven sensitivities necessary to be an effective counselor, elaborate on the competencies necessary to be a skilled counselor, understand the cognitive, emotional, behavioral and spiritual responses of the patient with a life-threatening illness, discuss the history of dying and illness and understand the five different phases the individual experiences during a life-threatening illness: the prediagnostic phase, the crisis of diagnosis, the chronic phase of the illness, counseling clients in recovery/remission and counseling clients in the terminal phase.

Patients experience various physical and psychosocial changes in the end of life. Physical symptoms, treatment’s side effects and discomfort limit patients’ daily functioning and social life. Negative emotions may naturally come up, and there may be behavioral and even personality changes. As family members, how are we going to address the psycho-social-emotional needs? How are we going to live with our beloved family members and manage their changes? How can we communicate with them to increase our quality time? This seminar will provide participants with useful tips on the issues.

When working with death, dying and bereavement, helping professional may at the same time experience challenges at his or her own personal context: Challenges on existential quest, dealing with the emotional heaviness, triggering of own grief related experiences etc. It is hence important to help the helping professional to be personally prepared for the work. Different means are used to facilitate personal reflections on this topic, e.g., experiential activities, videos, group sharing and discussions, brief lectures etc.

Parents love their children. They strive to offer the best care to their offspring as much as they could. To most parents in Hong Kong, owning to their work arrangements, they have to hand their young children to those who they trust most such as the grandparents for care. Consequently, quite a number of children have formed intimate ties with their grandparents since their birth. Once the grandparents suffer from a serious and even life threatening illness, the adults in the family are usually preoccupied with caring the sick and managing the chores. The young kids in the family are usually left unnoticed. Their anxiety and grief arouse from the loss of their beloved one are oversighted. In this workshop, the needs of children in facing the imminent death of their loved one as well as the effective strategies and skills in supporting them in this critical period will be explored and discussed. After the accomplishment of the workshop, the participants will acquire a better understanding, enhanced confidence and handful skills in supporting children to face the imminent death of their grandparents.

雖然近年香港人越來越開放談論臨終議題，但在傳統華人文化當中仍然是不太受歡迎的話 題。表達藝術治療是心理治療的一種，提供一個具創意、沒有威懾及充滿支持的空間讓參 與者能通過非口述及口述的結合方式去表達、控制並處理複雜的情緒。通過不同藝術形式， 例如舞蹈、寫作、繪畫、音樂或戲劇，參與者能於安全的環境通過創意表達他們本身的心 理、社交及靈性上的糾結並得到啟發。此工作坊旨在教授安寧服務專業人士、支援人員、 及照顧者如何通過表達藝術去協助病人及其家庭。

Consistent with theories of lifelong psychosocial growth and human development, people indeed possess rich and valuable life experiences over courses of life. Yet, it is often a challenge for practitioners to bring out the goodness of life that people accumulate over life span. Narrative therapy (NT), as an alternative solution to this challenge, offers an effective means to recover and recollect personal life knowledge for renewal of purpose and pursuit of values to benefit others. Using the metaphor of ‘Tree of Life’, the workshop aims to transfer theoretical knowledge and practical skills to enable participants to reconnect unique life events to make sense of one’s existence and meaning of life.
